The Certificate in Family Office & Governance is one of the six learning modules offered under WMI’s Certificate in Family Office for Legal Practitioners programme, developed in partnership with the Law Society of Singapore.
This module focuses on governance, advisory, and decision‑making considerations within the family office and private wealth context. It examines how family offices are structured and governed across generations and jurisdictions, and the role of professional advisors in supporting families on ownership, control, and long‑term continuity matters.
The module is designed to be taken as part of a stackable programme structure, allowing participants to progress through the modules at their preferred pace while managing ongoing professional commitments.

This module introduces the family office landscape, its evolution, and the global trends shaping the sector. Participants develop a clear understanding of the core functions of family offices and their role within the private wealth ecosystem, including how family offices interact with tax, investment, and professional advisory disciplines in supporting families and their enterprises.
Participants examine family office governance frameworks, including key structures such as family constitutions, family councils, ownership and control arrangements, and board dynamics. Emphasis is placed on aligning family values, vision, roles, and responsibilities to support effective governance and long‑term continuity. Comparative governance approaches across major jurisdictions are explored, together with fiduciary duties and responsibilities arising from complex ownership structures and related‑party arrangements.
The module also addresses the management of family dynamics, incorporating the perspectives of principals and next‑generation family members. Participants explore cultural and jurisdictional influences on decision‑making, learn to recognise early indicators of tension, and apply practical frameworks for conflict management, mediation, and negotiation. The use of governance and legal instruments in navigating sensitive family matters is examined within this context.
Through a combination of structured teaching, practical case studies, and guided discussion, participants gain applied insights into governance and advisory challenges within the family office and private wealth environment.
