The Changemaker’s Compass:
Navigating Excellence in Asian Philanthropy

The Changemaker’s Compass is written for practitioners who sit in those conversations every day—private bankers, family office and foundation teams, as well as philanthropy advisors and professionals navigating complex giving decisions.

Background

Across Asia, philanthropy advisory sits at the intersection of private wealth, public purpose, and cultural expectations—yet it remains one of the few advisory roles without shared professional standards.

Practitioners are often confronted with tensions and consequential choices. For instance, when donor intent and community needs diverge, equally experienced advisors may arrive at markedly different recommendations.

As philanthropic capital grows across the region, so too does the importance of how these decisions are made—and whose voices are included.

A compass, not a rulebook

The Changemaker’s Compass, developed by WMI’s Asia Centre for Changemakers, responds to this gap by advancing a clear position: professional philanthropy advisory is about exercising judgment in contexts shaped by unequal power, competing priorities, and incomplete information.

Like a compass, the guide is designed to help advisors navigate—not prescribe—the path.

What’s inside

The guide sets out 10 principles organised across three core areas drawn from real advisory practice across Asia:

  • Personal Conduct – Upholding integrity, professionalism, and transparency while actively managing conflicts of interest.
  • Duty to Clients and Communities – Balancing donor intent with community priorities and long-term social outcomes.
  • Collaboration and Stewardship – Strengthening trust, partnerships, and system-wide effectiveness within the philanthropic ecosystem.

It also addresses issues that are becoming harder to ignore in practice, including how power shapes whose voices are heard, how communities are represented in fundraising narratives, and how advisors navigate increasingly complex cross-border contexts.

Advisors working with families, foundations, and institutions can use it as a reference to navigate high-stakes decisions—from cross-border giving to donor–community alignment and stakeholder trust.

A shared reference point for a growing field

The Changemaker’s Compass is designed and intended as a living framework — one that evolves through application, reflection, and refinement among practitioners.

In doing so, it supports Singapore’s ambition to strengthen its role as a regional hub for philanthropy practice and leadership, contributing to the development of clearer standards across Asia.

We invite you to explore it, test it in your own context, and share how it shapes your advisory practice.
