Accelerating Donor-Advised Funds for Philanthropic Impact in Singapore and Asia

Philanthropy Guide - Issue 05

As part of the Impact Philanthropy Partnership (IPP), a joint initiative with the Private Banking Industry Group, supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, this research report and guide is the fifth in a series of thought leadership guides to advance practice in the philanthropic space.

This report builds on the significant interest in Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) among the financial and social impact sectors. This report aims to identify and establish new mechanisms to support Singapore’s ambition of becoming a leading philanthropic hub in Asia.

Part One Focuses on covering global trends with DAFs, with a focus on the United States while drawing trends from other regions such as Europe to derive key insights that may be gleaned for Singapore’s learning. Situating the United States as a comparative case with a more robust DAF ecosystem, this report juxtaposes the insights with Singapore’s future of giving scenarios to formulate several recommendations which will be suitable for Singapore.

Part Two focuses on sharing the research findings and insights from ecosystem partners and stakeholders, offering readers important insights into the ecosystem’s sentiments, players involved, as well as organisational experiences with DAFs and a market analysis on DAF users.

Together, this report offers a deep-dive into DAF in Singapore, going beyond a descriptive analysis, and into offering context-specific recommendations for policymakers and DAF ecosystem players to innovate new legislations and/or products to drive the adoption and effectiveness of DAF as a philanthropic vehicle.
