Successful succession is about more than transferring wealth. It is about developing the people who will steward it.
Building on WMI’s 2025 report, Asia’s Succession Moment-Closing the Planning Gap to Safeguard Legacy, Stewardship by Design shifts the focus from the planning gap to the development gap: how families prepare future generations not simply to inherit, but to exercise judgement and carry responsibility as circumstances change.
The research combines WMI’s Asian family-office research with work conducted with academics from Harvard Business School and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, alongside in-depth family interviews and academic research.
Responsibility turns learning into stewardship
WMI’s quantitative analysis finds that family offices reporting cross-generational participation in strategic or operational decisions have 6.5 times the odds of viewing their next generation as prepared, after accounting for other measured development and succession practices. The association reinforces a central insight: participation is most impactful when it carries responsibility and makes judgement visible.
Develop the stewards the family will need next
Families may need capable owners, governors, leaders, investors, philanthropists and convenors rather than one successor expected to replicate the founder. Prepare the next generation for the enterprise it expects to own, not simply the business the founder built.
Development works across generations
Preparing future stewards also requires current roles to evolve. Senior generations need to make accumulated judgement and relationships accessible while creating room for others to exercise responsibility. Resilience grows when the family’s ability to act becomes less dependent on any one individual.
Purpose is renewed through contribution
Future generations need to understand what the family stands for without inheriting a fixed set of answers. Through enterprise, investment, philanthropy and other contributions, purpose is transmitted through values, but renewed through contribution.
Design stewardship into how the family operates
There is no single development model. Family offices can connect learning with genuine responsibilities, while advisers can strengthen the family’s capacity to make consequential decisions. The longer-term ambition is to build a system in which each generation can develop the one that follows.
